RightAngle Updates are business transformation

Table of Contents

Energy trading companies relying on RightAngle face increasing risk when operating on outdated or unsupported versions. Upgrading is not just a technical necessity – it is critical for maintaining performance, security, and long-term scalability.

This case study details how capSpire delivered a complex RightAngle upgrade to S24 for a large midstream energy company with zero disruption to business operations.

The Client

A leading North American midstream energy company, responsible for delivering a significant share of U.S. natural gas, partnered with capSpire to modernize its RightAngle trading and asset management platform.

Operating across a highly integrated network of gathering, processing, transportation, and storage assets, the company’s systems support natural gas demand across power generation, heating, and industrial sectors.

Two core RightAngle environments supported their Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) trading and midstream asset management businesses.

Both environments were running on unsupported versions, creating operational risk, limiting vendor support, and restricting access to platform enhancements. capSpire was engaged to upgrade to RightAngle S24 while preserving existing business processes.

This was not a standard version migration.

The scope included:

  • NGL trading: RightAngle S15 → S24 (six major releases, full PowerBuilder to .NET conversion)
  • Midstream asset management: RightAngle S21 → S24

Additional complexity included a large legacy codebase with limited documentation, custom components requiring retirement or refactoring, tight compliance-driven timelines, limited internal testing resources, and a hard requirement to maintain existing business workflows without disruption.

The project also introduced Azure DevOps, requiring new governance models and release processes.

Using the capSpire Delivery Framework, a structured methodology for disciplined execution, stakeholder alignment, and working solutions at every stage, capSpire addressed these challenges and delivered both projects on time and on budget.

The Delivery

Platform modernization

Full conversion from PowerBuilder to .NET, with alignment to vendor-supported infrastructure and security standards. New infrastructure was provisioned to support both S24 environments.

Testing and validation

Regression testing validated critical workflows, with end-to-end business scenario testing covering valuation, settlements, and accounting. Both teams developed comprehensive test cases that now serve as reusable assets for future enhancements and regression testing.

DevOps enablement

Migration to Azure DevOps established structured deployment pipelines with promotion paths across Development, Test, QA, and Production environments, improving release governance and reducing deployment risk.

Deployment assurance

Structured go-live planning, rollback strategies, and post-go-live stabilization ensured a smooth transition. Because users were already familiar with RightAngle, training focused only on changes introduced between versions, enabling rapid adoption without impacting daily operations.

Results

The upgrade significantly extended the value of the company’s RightAngle investment while reducing operational and technical risk.

Immediate outcomes:

  • Two RightAngle environments successfully upgraded to S24
  • Six major releases consolidated into a single modern platform
  • Full migration from PowerBuilder to .NET
  • Zero material disruption at go-live

Long-term benefits:

  • Restored vendor support and compliance with modern infrastructure standards
  • Reduced technical debt and long-term maintenance costs
  • Improved system stability, performance, and batch reliability
  • Strengthened security posture and audit readiness
  • Established a repeatable upgrade cycle for future scalability
