IT HAPPENED WHILE SURFING ONE DAY
It wasn’t through a job posting or a career fair that Cian Murray learned about capSpire. It happened while surfing one day.
Though discovering capSpire out on the ocean is unusual, it is, in fact, very common for candidates to come across job opportunities at capSpire directly from happy employees who are casually talking about their professions. With stellar satisfaction ratings and higher-than-average employee retention, this method of organic recruiting is a frequent occurrence at capSpire. This is how things unfolded for Cian Murray, a Senior Consultant at capSpire, back in 2019.
“A brother of someone on my surfing team was telling me about his job at capSpire. I thought it was really interesting,” says Cian. After an internet search and a message on LinkedIn, he began his foray into the ETRM world.
At the time, Cian was a student and looking for the next step in his career. While he was initially working in pharmaceuticals, he didn’t find the work challenging. More motivated by writing, video game coding, and software development, Cian began studying Business Information Systems. And after the momentous encounter with an acquaintance through the surfing team, Cian began his career at capSpire.
COMBATING CHALLENGES WITH CREATIVITY
Based in Cork, Ireland, today Cian has an array of responsibilities in his role. From training Igniters and new employees to serving as a European Manager of the Allegro Center of Excellence, and also as a point of contact for clients on any technical or functional needs, his day-to-day is filled with purpose and creativity.
“It’s challenging,” says Cian. “But that’s the main reason why I like my job. You have to stay up-to-date. You have to be good at problem-solving.”
Cian also notes the global impact of commodity training. It’s ever evolving, and some challenges are timely, sensitive, and complex. However, this is where Cian thrives. “I really enjoy solving hard problems with cool solutions,” he says. And sometimes, that cool solution is a simple one, tailored specifically for a client’s unique needs.
For example, while Cian commonly facilitates large-scale ETRM software implementations, a smaller solar energy trading company needed a very simple solution to synchronize workflows.
Over coffee one day, Cian and his team concocted the idea for a bespoke, mini ETRM system using Excel. The simple and customized solution was a success. Scalable for future growth, but effective and useful for their current operations, “we made quite a good impression,” Cian boasts.
“We like making raving fans of our clients,” he added.
CONTINUING EDUCATION AND CAREER GROWTH
An interesting and diverse array of clients makes work interesting for employees like Cian, but also keeps skills sharp and ideas flowing. Knowledge sharing is an important part of the culture at capSpire. The company offers training opportunities and is supportive of individual interests an employee might wish to pursue. From UX certifications and Python training to AI education, a supportive career development strategy keeps employees’ skills expanding, and the knowledge base vast.
“capSpire is very supportive of the skills we want to learn,” says Cian. “For career growth, it’s exceptional.”
Once knowledge is gained, it’s often shared through lunch and learns, spirited Teams calls, brainstorming sessions, or over coffee. There is no gatekeeping at capSpire.
