THE CLIENT

Our client is a leading U.S. midstream energy company operating one of North America’s largest and most complex infrastructure networks, with approximately 60,000 miles of pipelines, processing plants, NGL fractionators, storage assets, and terminals. The organization plays a critical role in gathering, processing, transporting, and marketing natural gas, NGLs, crude oil, and refined products – connecting key production basins to major market hubs.

At the core of its operations is Allegro, the company’s enterprise Commodity Trading and Risk Management (CTRM/ETRM) platform. Allegro supports physical natural gas trade capture, position management, financial integration, hedging, and enterprise-wide credit risk management across a highly interconnected system landscape.

THE CHALLENGE

Modernizing an End-of-Life ETRM Platform

The client was operating on Allegro version 145.5.2, a legacy release no longer supported by the vendor. This created increasing operational risk and limited the platform’s ability to scale with business demands.

Upgrading to Allegro V24 was not a straightforward migration. It required a multi-version upgrade across a highly integrated trading ecosystem, including:

  • Market data and pricing feeds
  • Exchange integrations (ICE and CME)
  • Credit risk systems and workflows
  • A custom hedge accounting module
  • Large-scale data imports from RightAngle for liquids trading

As Allegro served as the central system of record for trade and risk, any integration failure could impact downstream processes such as scheduling, settlement, and risk reporting simultaneously.

THE CAPSPIRE SOLUTION:

Blueprint-Driven Allegro Upgrade Execution

capSpire approached the engagement with a blueprint-first methodology, ensuring alignment before development began.

Key components of the solution included:

1. Comprehensive Blueprint Phase

  • Documented current-state workflows and integrations
  • Identified risks and requirement gaps early
  • Established a shared, future-state architecture

2. End-to-End System Modernization

  • Upgraded and validated integrations with ICE, CME, and RightAngle
  • Rationalized legacy credit workflows using platform best practices
  • Enhanced system architecture for long-term maintainability

3. Security & Governance Enhancements

  • Implemented role-based access controls (RBAC)
  • Introduced audit trails and stronger system governance
  • Improved compliance and operational transparency

4. Rigorous Testing & Deployment Strategy

  • Dedicated integration testing phase before UAT
  • Two full User Acceptance Testing (UAT) cycles
  • Full deployment rehearsals to validate cutover readiness

5. Controlled Go-Live & Hypercare

  • Seamless production deployment
  • Targeted hypercare support
  • Transition to full client ownership post-go-live

This structured, proactive approach ensured that the upgrade remained predictable, controlled, and aligned with business priorities.

THE IMPACT:

Scalable, Next-Generation ETRM Platform

On-Time, On-Scope Delivery
The project met its deployment timeline, demonstrating the effectiveness of early-stage planning and blueprinting.

Near-Zero Disruption Go-Live
Extensive testing and rehearsals enabled a smooth cutover, with only one minor post-go-live issue resolved within an hour.

Transition to a Supported, Modern Platform
The upgrade to Allegro V24 restored vendor support and positioned the client for ongoing, incremental upgrades.

Reduced Technical Debt
Modernized integrations replaced years of custom logic with standardized, maintainable architecture across ICE, CME, and RightAngle.

Enhanced Risk Governance & Compliance
New security controls and audit capabilities improved credit risk management, compliance, and internal governance.

Operational Independence
The client exited hypercare fully self-sufficient, with internal teams equipped to manage and scale the platform.
