The capSpire Digital Internship Program: Developing the Next Generation of Consultants

As our digital practice continues to expand globally, capSpire is pleased to announce our digital internship program. This is a new paid opportunity targeted toward recent graduates and students in fields such as computer science, engineering, and information technology who are interested in establishing a strong foundation for a future career in digital transformation.

The main objective of the digital internship program is to cultivate and enhance development skills by contributing to the creation of technical solutions for system implementations, upgrades, and enhancements, as well as assisting in the design, development, and maintenance of data architecture, data pipelines, and infrastructure that support data-driven initiatives.

Significant benefits for interns include:

  • Gaining real-world experience working directly on companies’ digital transformations while collaborating with all stakeholders.
  • Enhancing problem-solving skills.
  • Getting to take ownership of tasks designed to build technical and professional competence.
  • Learning alongside experienced consultants, as well as company leadership, and receive mentorship.
  • Enjoying the opportunity to potentially join the capSpire team full time based on the quality of their work output and cultural fit.

“We evaluate and select digital interns based on their compatibility with the capSpire culture and their desire to develop innovative solutions to complex problems for the commodity space. We want to see the drive and willingness to put serious efforts,” said Divvayya Kakarla, Principal Consultant, Digital. “When a challenge is placed before them, or a new issue they’ve never encountered before, we want to know whether they’re adaptable. Can they leverage their existing skill set and rise to the test? Are they willing to learn new skills and stretch themselves? Will they ask questions and communicate? Do they have an enthusiastic attitude and creative mindset to think outside the box? After all, we want to see candidates grow during their time with us.”

Sumit Kumar is an example of a graduate student – studying for a master’s degree in machine learning and artificial intelligence – who recently completed capSpire’s digital internship program and enjoyed a successful experience. He came to capSpire with a background in commodity trading and risk management (CTRM) systems, specifically Allegro. This experience proved useful in maturing an internal product.

“As an intern, my biggest accomplishment was integrating chatSpire, an internal chatbot, capable of answering CTRM-related queries, into Microsoft Teams,” said Sumit. “I first documented the entire model and incorporated it into Teams. Now, this is a valuable tool for training, CTRM knowledge sharing, and internal enablement. It reviews all internal policies and documents to answer specific questions around policies or about how to set up a CTRM system. Actually, it can address any program or system you’re looking for.”

“This was a great example in which the degree and skill set of the candidate greatly contributed in advancing a key internal initiative and yielded very positive results,” said Divvayya.

Additionally, Sumit gained exposure to another capSpire product, RAPTOR (Risk Arbitrage Position and Trade Optimization Repository). This is a 100% cloud-based advanced risk reporting and analytics engine that connects to multiple CTRM systems. According to Sumit, this is an exciting product because it gives companies full control over their commercial data and lets them take their reporting to the next level—even if their CTRM system is older and cannot support reporting capabilities such as P&L attribution, value-at-risk (VaR), and stress testing. Companies can extract data out of their system, perform advanced analysis, and gain valuable insights into their business, including the ability to explain mark-to-market swings and primary drivers of P&L.

“Typically, CTRM shops are focused on servicing software and lack digital-led initiatives. The digital practice is unique to capSpire—I haven’t seen a lot of companies doing what they’re doing. capSpire is in the perfect position to merge technology with problem solving,” said Sumit.
